Women's Sexualities: Portrayals and PerspectivesEvents List Keynote Address A
devoted activist and writer, Gloria Steinem is undeniably one of the
most important voices of the modern womens movement. Perhaps best known as the co-founder, editor and owner of Ms.
Magazine, Ms. Steinems name is synonymous with the advancement
of womens social equality in America and throughout the world.
Ms. Steinem will present the keynote address for the series bringing
her own unique perspective on the changing face of womens sexualities
over the past 50 years. Thursday,

of the IU Art Museum will offer a special tour on the topic of womens
sexualities in honor of the 50th anniversary of Alfred Kinseys
publication Sexual Behavior in the Human Female. Tours can be arranged by calling the museum

Semesters 2003 Passion & Purity: American Womens Sexualities The Lilly Library
presents and exhibition which explores the historical and social context
of womens sexualities. Ranging
from An Act Against Adultery and Polygamie (1964) to Erica
Jongs Fear of Flying (1973), items on display will document
individual experience as well as the influence of family, community,
and religious groups on the way women have conducted their sexual lives.

23rd The Bloomington Breast Project The Bloomington Breast Project is as much a piece of art as it is a community event; it is as much an assemblage of individual sculptural pieces, as it is a collaboration, a collective event, a site-specific installation, and an ongoing community performance. Artist Karen Baldner, originator of the project presents this installation at the Stanley B. Mendelson Gallery in Bloomington. January
15th-February 15th This installation at the Stanley B. Mendelson Gallery will guide the viewer into thinking about how women sacrifice pain for beauty even in our own culture. Most Americans see the practice of foot binding as being a sacrifice for status in the Asian culture, but American women also suffer terribly in old age from wearing high heels or too small a size of shoe in order ot fit an ideal of a smaller foot. Maidens, Mothers and Crones Talk about Living with Passion The topic of this day-long workshop is designed to bring women from three different generations together to explore the many aspects of feminine sexuality as they are expressed in the cycles of life. This workshop will provide a variety of activities to help women understand and appreciate the female body, mind and psyche through discussion and interaction of daughters, mothers and grandmothers.The activities will involve role playing, writing, discussions, music and poetry to allow each individual to come to a greater understanding of her complete feminine nature and the meaning it holds for her and those with whom she shares a legacy. Go Ask Alice! is the oldest internet health question and answer service. Judith Steinhart, Senior Health Educator for
Columbia Universitys Health Education Program and part of the
team behind Alice! will talk about questions received over the past
decade from 86 different countries.
Judith is a Certified Sexuality Educator for over 20 years and
a presenter at national sexuality conferences.

Wang Ping reading from from her new book: Aching for Beauty, Footbinding
in China (Anchor Books). In her book she explores the history and culture
surrounding footbinding through literary references, the relationship
between beauty and pain, and discusses the intense female bonds that
footbinding fostered. She will also read new poems and some fiction.
Turn On This Voice: Women, Poetry and Sexuality (EVENT CANCELLED) Poetry reading by
Bloomington area women poets. Woman as The Other: Amazons,
Gorgons and Maenads in Ancient Greek Art June Machover Reinisch, Ph.D. served as director of The Kinsey Institute from 1982-1993. Dr. Reinisch now resides in New York City where she is the President of R2 Science Communications, Inc. and the Director of the Muse Foundation of the Museum of Sex. Dr. Reinisch will look at the erotic art of the past to see what these images can tell us about women and their sexual lives. historic house museum built in 1835 as the home of IUs first president,
Andrew Wylie. One bedroom in
the house will be set up as a birthing room which will also contain
a display case with books, articles, and illustrations relating to midwifery
and birthing practices in the 19th century.
Free tours are offered between the hours of 10am and 2pm Tuesday
through Saturday or by appointment.

focuses on the intersections of culture, sexuality and gender in representations
of Asian women. Radhika Parameswaran
of Indiana University will analyze the controversial film Fire,
particularly its rendering of lesbian sexuality; Andra Alvis of Indiana
University will discuss the erotic comic books of Japanese female manga
artist Uchida Shungicu; and Chen Xiaomei of Ohio State University will
explore revolutionary posters in Mao-era China and their impact on young

presents a discussion of feminism, tableaux vivants, and physical culture
in the Victorian era. October 17, Wittenberger Auditorium from 10:15-11:45 am Women's Sexualities Conference: Historical,
Interdisciplinary and At
the 50th anniversary of Kinseys controversial female
volume, this conference provides a forum for recent feminist,
historical, theoretical, international, cross-cultural, and inter-disciplinary
scholarship related to womens sexualities.
It features nationally and internationally distinguished feminist
historian and theorists, as well as other critical scholars of sexuality,
gender, and reproduction. Particular focus is placed upon Kinseys
sex research project its scientific, intellectual and clinical
antecedents and legacies and its implications for understandings
of womens erotic behaviors and identities since the mid-20th
