Frequently asked questions
We study issues that directly impact people’s quality of life, from exploring ways to reduce rates of STIs, sexual violence, loneliness, and other harms, to identifying ways to keep relationships strong, navigate modern dating dynamics, use technology safely, improve sexual pleasure and wellbeing, and foster healthier, more fulfilling connections.
Our research is used by a wide variety of people in their everyday lives, as well as scientists, health professionals, therapists, historians, policymakers, artists, and many others. For example, our research on relationship behaviors can guide counseling or identify improvements to dating apps, and our research on consent can inform policies and programs designed to reduce sexual assault and exploitation.
Our Library & Special Collections preserve historical records and artifacts that show how sexuality has evolved in different historical periods and cultures over the last 2000 years. For example, the archives preserve personal testimonies from the 1980s AIDS epidemic, ancient Roman artifacts, celebrity memorabilia, love letters, Victorian medical notes, Japanese pillow books, antique sex toys, vintage magazine collections, historical documents on LGBTQ+ rights, and contemporary art.
Scholars, artists, authors, producers, and many others around the world use the information saved in our collections to inform their books, films, lectures, documentaries, and podcasts, as well as academic, research-related, and creative projects.

Ethical conduct of all our research is very important. All our research studies follow federal policies for research protections and are reviewed carefully by Indiana University to ensure studies meet strict standards regarding safety and confidentiality that are standard practice at any credible research university or academic institution today.
In the 1940s, the Kinsey Institute began to answer people's basic questions about sex at a time when many aspects of sexual behavior were considered taboo and laws criminalized everything from oral sex to contraception in the United States—even within marriage.
Today, our research has evolved to address complex contemporary topics like mental health, artificial intelligence, and online dating, and to answer modern-day questions people have such as how to communicate with a partner, navigate mismatched desires, explore pleasure safely and confidently, understand our bodies, and maintain intimacy over time.
Sex is often misunderstood or sensationalized and for many can be tied to trauma, shame, or confusion. Building understanding is why the Kinsey Institute answers everyday questions about sexuality, relationships, and wellbeing. If you have ever used a dating app, needed a condom, searched for relationship tips online, sought medical treatment for a sexual problem, or seen a therapist or marriage counselor, chances are you've come across our research without even realizing it.
When there are so many myths and taboos surrounding conversations about sex and relationships, the Kinsey Institute provides evidence-based information that is nonpartisan and available to everyone. Our researchers specialize in subjects like biology, psychology, anthropology, technology, and history, and a wide range of people and organizations rely on our expertise.
All Kinsey Institute studies meet strict ethical standards and are overseen by Indiana University. We reject all forms of sexual harm, and a significant part of the Kinsey Institute's research is dedicated to reducing sexual harm from violence, trafficking, abuse, harassment, and other crimes.
