The Kinsey Institute is deeply saddened by the loss of Dr. Ruth Westheimer, a legendary figure in the field of sex psychology and education, known professionally as Dr. Ruth.
Dr. Ruth’s influence extended far beyond academic circles. She gave millions of people across America and around the world permission to ask everyday questions about sex and relationships that impacted their lives. Her candid, humorous, and nonjudgmental approach to discussing sex helped make her a beloved household name.
“Dr. Ruth's legacy of openness and education continues to inspire, fostering ongoing conversations that are vital to academic inquiry and interpersonal growth,” said Dr. Justin Garcia, Executive Director of the Kinsey Institute. “Her curiosity and commitment fostered deep connections with so many, and we can still learn a great deal from Dr. Ruth through her life’s work.”
Challenging societal taboos, Dr. Ruth created a forum that fostered wellness, safety, and respect instead of shame and suffering in silence. Her work empowered countless individuals to speak openly about their sexual experiences and seek helpful knowledge.
Dr. Ruth will continue to inspire and inform all of us at the Kinsey Institute as we work to preserve the valuable knowledge delivered over her decades-long career. Her contributions in the field of human sexuality will be remembered for generations to come.
We extend our deepest condolences to the Westheimer family and all her loved ones.
Rest in peace, Dr. Ruth.
